Domestic Abuse Victim Murdered While Under Police Protection

KTLA Reports

LOS ANGELES — Investigators are trying to determine how a woman under police protection was fatally stabbed while officers were watching her home.

It happened inside a second-story apartment on Cochran Street near Pico Boulevard just before midnight, according to Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Rick McClure.

The officers had taken the woman back to her apartment after she filed a domestic violence report.

They walked the woman to her apartment and checked to make sure no one else was inside.

Officers who specialize in domestic violence drove her back to her home.

Law enforcement sources said the officer went into the apartment with the woman to make sure the suspect was not there.

They thoroughly checked the apartment and then went to their car which was parked on the street in front of the building.

It’s believed the man reached the second-floor apartment from the roof, then climbed in a bathroom window, Detective Gus Villanueva said.

The officers heard the woman’s screams, ran into the apartment and saw a man stabbing the woman.

They opened fire, fatally wounding the attacker.

He and the woman were taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where they later died.

Their identities have not been released.

Neighbors described the victim as a friendly woman with 3-year-old daughter who had moved in a few months ago.

The two were said to have been romantically involved in the past.
