Authorities in Tacoma, Wash., are investigating the shooting death of an elementary school teacher. The suspect in the case was reportedly gunned down by police shortly after the shooting took place.
The unidentified gunman shot and killed a female special education teacher at Birney Elementary School at about 7:30 a.m. today. He then attempted to flee the area but was confronted by police a few blocks from the school. The suspect reportedly opened fire on officers before he was shot and killed.
We’re lucky our guy’s OK. The guy did have [a] semiautomatic and did fire a round,” Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer told KCPQ-TV.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the teacher or the suspect. No one else was injured at the school.
Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the victim had an anti-harassment protection order against the suspect, but he could not offer any details about the order or their relationship.
As a result of the shooting, the school has been closed so police can continue their investigation.
