When Nintendo launched the Wii back in 2006, it soon found it had a winner. The Wii’s ability to incorporate users’ physical movement into gameplay was revolutionary. Now, Nintendo is hoping to replicate that success with the official successor to the Wii, the Wii U, which is due to hit the streets this month. The Wii U aims to build on the massive success of the original Wii, but no doubt Nintendo will be bringing plenty that is new to the plate. So, let’s take a look at what the new Wii U has to offer on paper.
First off, there will be two different versions of the Wii U. The cheaper of the two will be a “Basic” 8 GB version that comes in a white case. Then, the top of the range version, which is cased in black, comes with 32 GB of flash storage. In addition, the 32 GB version will come supplied with docks and stand.
Although the Wii has been a massive success for Nintendo, it is fair to say that it lacked certain features as compared with the Xbox and the Playstation. Luckily for Nintendo, the innovative physical movement side of the Wii compensated for those shortcomings, such that many gamers purchased a Wii as a second console to supplement their Playstation or Xbox. However, when it came to planning the Wii U, Nintendo’s designers and engineers were determined to design a machine that could be a contender for gaming top dog.
Where Nintendo aims to score in a big way with its upcoming Wii U is with the device’s high resolution “Gamepad” touchscreen controller. This hand-held controller unit is said by some to be good enough to use like an iPad when it is not being used for gaming purposes! Whether that is true or not remains to be seen. But, without a shadow of a doubt, the Wii U is the most highly anticipated console launch for many a year.
