Child left in car at school dies

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 21-month-old child died when his mother left him strapped into her car while she went to work.

A preliminary investigation indicates Joseph Chatmon was left inside a parked vehicle at Samuel E. Hubbard Elementary School Friday.

Authorities say he was restrained in a child safety seat from the time his mother, 23-year-old India Chatmon, arrived at work Friday morning, until she left work late that afternoon.

Authorities say when Chatom found her son in the vehicle, she drove to an emergency room, but the child died.

Chatmon is an employee at the school. She lives in Douglas County, according to the sheriff’s office.
