Rihanna honoured at Glamour awards

Rihanna was among the ladies honoured at Glamour magazine’s Women Of The Year awards in New York.

The 21-year-old was given the gong by model Iman, who referred to the singer’s ordeal earlier this year, when she was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown.

Rihanna initially returned to Brown but said last week that she regrets it, because it sent the wrong message to her fans, and Iman said: “Now I am even more impressed with her dignity and courage.”

She noted that Rihanna would serve as a role model to victims of domestic violence.

Other women honoured included 81-year-old poet Maya Angelou and fashion designer Stella McCartney, the daughter of Beatle Paul McCartney. Three Beatle wives – Yoko Ono, widow of John Lennon, Olivia Harrison, widow of George Harrison, and Ringo Starr’s wife Barbara Starkey – presented her with the award.

America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks presented an award to tennis champion Serena Williams.

Comic actress Amy Poehler received her award from Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels, who spoke admiringly of how Amy performed her famous Sarah Palin rap skit when she was nine months pregnant.

Maria Shriver was honoured for her work on various women’s issues.
