The Twitter underground: The Ins and Out of Adult culture on Twitter

For decades, the adult industry has pioneered new technology to reach an audience. From the moment porn went viral, leaving the glossy pages behind and streaming straight into American living rooms, adult stars have been able to touch their patrons through methods often unexplored by other industries. Twitter is no exception. The social media feed is well known for assisting in business promotions of all shapes and sizes, yet some of the regulations allow the adult world to use this outlet in ways other businesses can’t use to their advantage. Between photos, updates, and links, industry stars are taking their careers to new heights.

True success throughout the porn industry often depends on brand recognition; whether it’s endorsement of an individual or that of an entire production company. Alexander Raymond Palumbo, executive in the adult entertainment business, challenges his stars to work on connecting with fans at a personal level, “I try to instill in performers that you should let people know who you are, invite them into your interaction,” he states.

Performers use the site to connect through common interests and advertise their unique assets. Stars like James Deen are able to come across as personable characters and use the forum to branch out into more mainstream media. He credits twitter with getting him a starring role in the feature film The Canyons. Because his tweets are often non-porn related; from encouraging voters to get to the ballots, to commenting on the Disney like nature of his Amazon wish list, he’s able to develop a persona that does more than attracting potential viewers on a physical level. Since opening his account, he’s pulled in young female viewers, a category that can be hard to reach in the industry.

Yet, in the nature of the business, many stars continue to entice their followers with photographs of what their mama gave ’em. With Twitter’s policy being somewhat vague regarding the nature of risque photos, adult entertainers are able to foster their fan base with their own brand of propaganda.

It’s no surprise that social media networks develop into advertising outlets. The proof of their subtle push of specific products and services is sublimely evident in Twitter’s hash tags. Sites like My firstsexnet blew up Twitter with hash tags that are everything from obvious (#porn,#sex) to links to their favorite star’s feeds like #adulttinyurl.com where vixens like Kayden Kross post provocative material.

If you need to get your porn fix at least for photos, all you have to do is look up your favorite porn star on Twitter and 9 times out of 10 they will be more happy to share the goods.
