Madonna, The Queen of Pop apparently isn’t “worthy” to honor the Purple One.
Billboard announced this month that Madonna would perform a tribute to the late Prince at its award show, igniting criticism and a Change.org petition.
This petition, which has received over 8,000 signatures, expresses outrage that Prince “is more than worthy of a better choice as a main performer.” Although she collaborated with Prince in the ‘80s, some feel the tribute should include other artists who worked closer with the legend.
Rising complaints have forced Billboard to defend its decision before the show even takes place. Executive producer Mark Bracco said during an interview with The Associated Press that, while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, he believes the show will be “fantastic.”
“I will say that we are honored and could not be more excited for Madonna to be on the show and to pay tribute to someone that was her friend and her peer and her colleague,” he said.
After Prince’s death, producers received a call from Madonna’s representation asking about a performance. While Bracco didn’t discuss any details, he promised fans a “very intimate” moment.
The Billboard Music Awards will air this Sunday, May 22.
