NEW YORK CITY, NY – The long wait for the premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 is almost coming to an end. Hulu has finally released the show’s first official trailer and has announced that return of the show on April. Despite the trailer being dialogue-free, fans are made aware that the sophomore season will be plunging back into the dark world of Gilead.
Fans may recall that in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 1 Finale, Offred (Elisabeth Moss), the main character, was arrested by the authorities. This followed after Offred defied Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd). She refused to kill Janine (Madeline Brewer) as ordered. Two guards picked her up from home and put her inside a black van.
The episode ended with Offred uncertain with her future. Moira (Samira Wiley), on the other hand, was able to reach Ontario, Canada, officially far from the borders of Gilead.
With a cliffhanger ending, followers of the award-winning dystopian series are hoping to get some clues on what will happen next in season 2. The short teaser didn’t give away many details on the upcoming plot. The novel from which the TV show is based on will also not serve as a spoiler since the new story deviates from the source material. Although, it is noted that author Margaret Atwood is in collaboration with showrunner Bruce Miller.
For now, fans are depending on details revealed during Sunday’s Television Critics Association panel. Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale will have a total of 13 episodes. It will be revolving around the pregnancy of Offred who will be stripped away with her rights to be a mother to that child.
This will lead her to deal with her struggles in searching for her daughter in Gilead. Miller said in an interview that the tone of the series will be involved with a lot of horror and cruelty. Meanwhile, actress Moss commented that The Handmaid’s Tale season will be a few shades darker than the first season.
The series will also be welcoming new faces soon. First to be identified to take part in season 2 episode 2 is A Different World actress Marisa Tomei. She is said to join the cast as a guest star and will play the role of a commander’s wife. She will enter into the scene as the show starts to explore more of “the colonies,” which is mentioned in the novel but not really looked into.
In the source novel, the colonies are described as a desolate wasteland where unwanted members of the society are sent to work very hard. It’s also the place where they will eventually die. Executive producer Warren Littlefield said that digging into more of the colonies is just an expansion of that world. They have no plans of exiting that world from the novel at all.
Returning to the series’ Season 2 in April are the regular cast members including Moss, Wiley, Dowd, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, and Max Minghella. The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 will debut on Hulu on April 25 with two new episodes, followed by one episode every Wednesday.
