Thor: Ragnarok is going to Hela… and he’s taking plenty of people with him.
Marvel officially announced the cast for the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, confirming, amongst other things, that the film’s villain will be Hela, played by Cate Blanchett. Other stars will also join Chris Hemsworth in the trilogy’s finale, including Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, and Jeff Goldblum.
With this announcement was the release of the movie’s first art—a silhouette of Hela and her army. Blanchett’s portrayal as this Asgardian goddness of death marks the first major female villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Yesterday’s news also ended months of speculation surrounding the roles of Ruffalo and Thompson. Thompson will be introduced as Valkyrie, while Ruffalo will return as Thor’s smashing Avengers pal, the Hulk.
Although Urban will be the axe-wielding Executioner, perhaps the most interesting update is the inclusion of the Grandmaster, played by Goldblum. The Grandmaster is an “Elder of the Universe” whose intelligence makes him an expert strategist. The eccentric Goldblum will depict this cosmic being, who is best known in the comics for possessing the final Infinity Gem before losing it to Thanos.
Thor: Ragnarok is set to release on November 3, 2017.
