Streaming services are adopting the traditional network TV approach of releasing trailers for new shows and movies after current content, a tactic now employed by Netflix for some of its most expensive productions.
On December 22, Netflix unveiled “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire,” a high-budget film directed by Zack Snyder featuring stars such as Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, and Djimon Hounsou. This film is the first of a two-part series, with “Part Two: The Scargiver” scheduled for release on April 19, 2024.
Details about “The Scargiver” remained largely under wraps until the release of “Part One.” Many viewers might have overlooked its trailer, which was uniquely released following the conclusion of “A Child of Fire.” It’s possible that some Netflix subscribers missed the trailer for “The Scargiver,” as it appeared only after the message ‘End of Part One’ was displayed, a point at which viewers might have already turned off their TVs or closed their browsers.
However, Netflix later posted the trailer for “The Scargiver” on YouTube, making it accessible to a wider audience. The sequel, “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver,” continues the narrative of the first movie. It tells the story of Kora, a rebel hidden on a distant farming planet, who gathers a group of renowned warriors to protect her village from a galactic empire, drawing the empire’s attention in the process.
While “A Child of Fire” introduced us to Kora and her eclectic team, it offered limited insight into the galactic empire. The trailer for “Part Two” suggests a deeper exploration of these characters and depicts the team’s confrontation with the empire, aided by the villagers.
Upon its release, “A Child of Fire” quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts, maintaining its position through Christmas Day, even against numerous holiday-themed movies. With a budget of $166 million, excluding marketing costs, the film represents Netflix’s largest investment in a single movie for the year, proving to be a successful risk.
The success of “Part One” has made “Part Two: The Scargiver” one of the most anticipated Netflix releases for 2024. The unannounced trailer drop has further heightened excitement for the film, potentially making it Netflix’s biggest release for the year, barring any surprise releases.
